Azerbaijan Airlines and the local government stated that an airliner from the airline crashed while making an emergency landing near the city of Aqtau in Kazakhstan.

The state-owned airline announced on Wednesday that the Embraer 190 aircraft was carrying 62 passengers and 5 crew members. The condition of all passengers is still unclear; however, the Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Ministry stated that at least 29 people are hospitalized, including two children.

On the 25th local time, the Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed that 38 people died in the passenger plane accident that day.

Azerbaijan Airlines stated that the plane was making an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers from Aqtau at the time. The official news agency Azartac reported shortly after the crash, citing a representative from the airline, that the cause of the crash may have been a bird strike. This information has not yet been officially confirmed, and authorities have stated that it is too early to determine the cause of the crash.

According to reports from TASS, the flight from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny in southern Russia was diverted due to heavy fog, first flying to Makhachkala on the Russian Caspian coast, and then to Aqtau.

Kazakhstan authorities initially stated there were 67 people on board, then corrected the number to 69.

The black box from the plane that crashed in Aqtau, Kazakhstan has been found.

On the 25th local time, Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister Bozumbayev stated that the Kazakh authorities will cooperate with the aircraft manufacturer Embraer to investigate the cause of the plane crash.

Earlier on the same day, regarding the cause of the plane crash, Bozumbayev stated that not even the preliminary cause can currently be determined. Experts will conduct work and clarify the investigation. No conclusions can be drawn yet. The Kazakh side has established an interdepartmental investigation task force. They will collect all evidence, conduct necessary identifications, and determine the cause of the crash based on that, as well as decode the black box. The Kazakh side will make the results public.
