As of the close on the 25th, the number of advancing and declining stocks in the Nikkei Average was 126 up, 99 down, and 0 unchanged.
On the 24th, the US stock market continued to rise. The Dow Jones average closed up 390.08 dollars at 43,297.03 dollars, and the Nasdaq finished up 266.25 points at 20,031.13. There was caution over rising long-term interest rates, leading to mixed performance after the market opened. On the day before the Christmas holiday, the shortened trading session saw technology stocks continue to be bought, boosting the stock market. Anticipation of a Christmas rally from the 24th into the year-end also contributed, expanding gains toward the close.
In response to the rise in US stocks, the Tokyo market began trading with a favorable buying atmosphere. After starting at around 39,100 yen, the Nikkei average, similarly to yesterday, saw a reduction in gains due to a decrease in participants associated with the Christmas holidays, at times dropping below 39,000 yen. However, due to a lack of trading activity, selling pressure did not increase, resulting in the Nikkei average fluctuating around the 39,000 yen level. The trading volume in the Main Board market was only 3.1 trillion yen.
The Nikkei Average at the close was 39,130.43 yen, up 93.58 yen (+0.24%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board was 1.7 billion shares, with a transaction value of 3 trillion 169.7 billion yen. By global sectors, Transportation Equipment, Nonferrous Metals, Iron & Steel, Mining, and Marine Shipping rose, while Electricity, Gas, Banks, Food, Land Transportation, and Air Transportation fell. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board, 52% of stocks rose, while 44% fell.
