The US stock market continued to rise. The Dow average increased by 66.69 dollars to 42,906.95 dollars, and the Nasdaq closed 192.29 points higher at 19,764.88.
Amid concerns about the deterioration of the consumer confidence index, the market opened mixed. The Dow continued to decline as long-term interest rates rose due to retreating expectations for rapid interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve (FRB). However, the Nasdaq held firm thanks to buying in high-tech stocks in expectation of a Santa Claus rally, broadening its gains towards the end of the day and boosting the overall market. With limited participation ahead of the Christmas holiday, the Dow also recovered into positive territory by closing. By sector, Semiconductors and related manufacturing, as well as Property Service and development rose, while food and staple goods retail saw a slight decline.
Apple (AAPL) saw an increase in stock due to expectations that sales of its new iPhone will meet or exceed forecasts, and reports of developing a Smart Doorbell with Facial Recognition technology to compete against Amazon's (AMZN) Smart Home Security brand, "Ring." Auto Manufacturers Ford Motor Co (F) and General Motors (GM) appreciated the news of Honda and NISSAN MOTOR CO entering into negotiations for a merger, and both stocks remained strong. Semiconductors NVIDIA (NVDA) and Broadcom (AVGO) rose in anticipation of a Christmas rally based on strong demand projections for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Department Stores Nordstrom Inc (JWN) announced that the founding family agreed to acquire the company for $6.25 billion and take it private, resulting in a decline.
Elon Mask, who is expected to lead "Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)" under the next Trump administration with Vivek Ramaswamy, criticized the Federal Reserve for being "absurdly overstaffed."
