Altman believes that Musk's hostility towards OpenAI largely stems from its success. He also mentioned that Musk had "high-profile" arguments with Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.
Recently, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman once again criticized CEO Elon Musk in an interview with The Free Press.$Tesla (TSLA.US)$He bluntly stated that Musk is "obviously a bully" who enjoys "fighting" with competitors. He also mentioned that Musk's high-profile battles with former companies have become a "circus."
Since Musk left OpenAI in 2018, he has maintained a strong critical stance toward his former company and its CEO Altman, and their relationship has become increasingly tense. In August this year, Musk refiled a lawsuit claiming he was "deceived" by Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman into founding OpenAI and asked a federal court to prevent OpenAI from transitioning into a for-profit entity.
In response, OpenAI publicly released a series of emails showing that Musk had pushed for OpenAI to become a for-profit business during his time at the company.
In the interview, Altman described Musk as a "legendary entrepreneur" who made significant contributions in the early days of OpenAI. However, he also pointed out that "he is clearly a bully, and he is also clearly someone who enjoys fighting." Altman also mentioned that Musk had previously had "high-profile" arguments with Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.
Altman believes that Musk's hostility towards OpenAI largely stems from its success and the fact that he now operates a "direct competitor". Last year, Musk announced his AI startup xAI and released multiple versions of the chatbot Grok.
Altman stated, "I believe that if everything we do were under Musk’s control, he would be pleased; when he felt we would surely fail, he left." He also said:
"I can look at this calmly, just as I remember how I felt when he said OpenAI's success rate was 0%, that you are all idiots, that he would withdraw funding, and that he wanted to do his own thing."
However, despite Musk preparing to play an increasingly important role during Trump's second term, Altman still believes that Musk will not use his power against his opponents. He previously stated:
"I think some people are really jerks on Twitter, but still won't abuse the systems of the country."
