[Afternoon Market Overview]

In the afternoon session, the Nikkei Average opened higher with a rise of 120.33 yen compared to the previous day, at 38933.91 yen, slightly expanding the gains from the previous close (38889.95 yen). During lunch hours, the Nikkei 225 futures traded in a range of 38900 yen to 38970 yen. The dollar-yen exchange rate was 1 dollar = 156.90-157.00 yen, reflecting a strong yen by about 80 sen since around 9 am. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite Index started slightly lower but then turned upward, rising about 0.4%, while the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index saw early declines but remained firm, also rising about 0.4%.

In the Tokyo market during the afternoon session, buying started to gain a lead compared to the morning session. The Nikkei Average fell more than 1000 yen over the previous five consecutive days, making it easier for buy orders to enter. On the other hand, the Dow futures were weak in Extended hours trading, which seemed to weigh on investor sentiment.

In the Sector, Real Estate, Oil & Coal Products, and Transportation Equipment were among the highest in gains, while the banking sector, Other Products, and Air Transportation had the highest declines.

In the top trading volume of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Main Board market, Mitsui E&S <7003>, Kioxia HD <285A>, Mitsukoshi Isetan <3099>, Toyota <7203>, Sony Group Corp <6758>, Renesas <6723>, Screen HD <7735>, Canon Inc-Spons Adr <7751>, Sanrio <8136>, and Kasumigaseki Capital <3498> were up. On the other hand, TOPPAN <7911>, Resona HD <8308>, 7&I HD <3382>, IHI <7013>, Mitsubishi UFJ <8306>, Mitsubishi Heavy <7011>, Mizuho <8411>, Socionext <6526>, Disco <6146>, and Advantest <6857> were down.
