13% Of This BrightSpire Capital Insider's Holdings Were Sold

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 19 23:46

From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in BrightSpire Capital, Inc.'s (NYSE:BRSP ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At BrightSpire Capital

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, David Palame, for US$338k worth of shares, at about US$6.76 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$5.93). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. David Palame was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of BrightSpire Capital

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 2.1% of BrightSpire Capital shares, worth about US$17m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About BrightSpire Capital Insiders?

The fact that there have been no BrightSpire Capital insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by BrightSpire Capital insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
