IQVIA Holdings Insiders Sold US$5.3m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 19 20:17

The fact that multiple IQVIA Holdings Inc. (NYSE:IQV) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

IQVIA Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President of Research & Development Solutions, W. Staub, sold US$3.5m worth of shares at a price of US$249 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$191. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does IQVIA Holdings Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. IQVIA Holdings insiders own 0.8% of the company, currently worth about US$291m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The IQVIA Holdings Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no IQVIA Holdings insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of IQVIA Holdings insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example - IQVIA Holdings has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
