The valuation of "AI Search New Rising Star" Perplexity has skyrocketed.
On December 17th, San Francisco time, the AI Search Engine company Perplexity completed its fourth round of financing this year, raising 0.5 billion USD, and the company valuation surged to 9 billion, increasing 17 times compared to the beginning of the year. At the start of this year, Perplexity's valuation was only 0.52 billion USD, and by this summer, the company's valuation had grown to 3 billion USD.
According to Bloomberg, this round of financing was led by venture capital firm IVP, with participation from Institutions such as NVIDIA, New Enterprise Associates, B Capital, and T Rowe Price. Previously, prominent industry figures including SoftBank's Vision Fund II, Amazon founder Bezos, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, and Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun had also invested in Perplexity.
Analysts say the new round of financing will help Perplexity compete against West Coast rivals in the increasingly fierce talent competition—just as Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi stated: "The current talent competition in the field of AI is unprecedented."
This year, Perplexity has developed rapidly, mainly profiting through subscription services, with its product receiving hundreds of millions of queries every month and reaching 15 million monthly active users. The company claims its annualized revenue has grown from $5 million in January to $35 million in August.
Currently, Perplexity is working to improve and utilize the search advertising system pioneered by Google, which allows advertisers to bid and place sponsored links in search query results. It is reported that Perplexity is negotiating with several major brands, inviting them to pilot advertising on Perplexity's platform.
