Investors Appear Satisfied With BlackSky Technology Inc.'s (NYSE:BKSY) Prospects As Shares Rocket 44%

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 17 18:52

BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE:BKSY) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 44% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 19% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking BlackSky Technology is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 3.5x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Professional Services industry have P/S ratios below 1.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How BlackSky Technology Has Been Performing

BlackSky Technology certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as BlackSky Technology's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 37% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 270% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 23% per annum during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 7.7% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why BlackSky Technology's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

The strong share price surge has lead to BlackSky Technology's P/S soaring as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of BlackSky Technology's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
