Pure Storage, Inc.'s (NYSE:PSTG) 28% Jump Shows Its Popularity With Investors

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 14 20:46

The Pure Storage, Inc. (NYSE:PSTG) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 74%.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Pure Storage is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 6.8x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Tech industry have P/S ratios below 1.3x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has Pure Storage Performed Recently?

How Is Pure Storage's Revenue Growth Trending?

Pure Storage's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 8.0% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 56% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 11% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 6.6% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Pure Storage is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Pure Storage's P/S

Pure Storage's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our look into Pure Storage shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
