Overview of the “Ishioka Eiko I Design” exhibition

In 2020, the DNP Cultural Promotion Foundation hosted a special exhibition centered around graphic design from the work of art director Eiko Ishioka at the “Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg)” (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) and the “Kyoto DDD Gallery” (Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture), which was well received. Based on this track record, the Foundation and DNP Art Communications have been holding traveling exhibitions since 2023 in cooperation with 5 museums nationwide, with the intention that more people from all over the country will know about Mr. Ishioka's appeal. The three supervisors of the Ishioka Eiko exhibition from GGG and Kyoto DDD Gallery (Ishioka Reiko, Kawajiri Koichi, and Nagai Hiroaki) continue to supervise this traveling exhibition, and the content makes use of the features of each museum based on the exhibition concepts of both galleries.

About the event at the Shimane Iwami Museum of Art

The fourth venue for the traveling exhibition is the Shimane Prefectural Iwami Museum of Art in the arts and culture center “Grand Tois,” a complex cultural facility representing western Shimane Prefecture. “Grand Toit,” designed by architect Hiroshi Naito, is a rare building that combines an art museum and theater, and uses approximately 0.28 million sheets of Sekishu tiles from the local Shimane prefecture. The nickname “Grand Tois” means “big roof” in French, and it expresses a red roof with sekishu tiles and how people gather under it. In the exhibition space of an art museum so familiar with the community, approximately 500 works imbued with Mr. Ishioka's insatiable passion, such as posters, commercials, artwork, and sketches that caused a great sensation, will be shown at once, centering on representative works of Mr. Ishioka's first half.
During the exhibition, various related events will also be held, such as gallery talks and lectures by supervisors, the New Year's event “New Year Eiko Mikuji”, and tea offerings named after Mr. Ishioka. Also, in the town of Masuda where the museum is located, multiple satellite venues will appear, and Ishioka's works and related books will be exhibited at various stores in the area, “Meet Eiko!” will also be implemented.
