According to Zhizhong Finance APP, Apple (AAPL.US) plans to switch to self-developed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi combination chips starting in 2025. This initiative is intended to improve device performance and energy efficiency while decreasing reliance on Broadcom (AVGO.US). According to insiders, the new chip has the internal code name 'Proxima', has been in development for several years, and is now scheduled for initial production in 2025, with applications first in the iPhone 17 series, Apple TV, and HomePod mini, followed by an expansion to the iPad and Mac product lines in 2026.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Apple plans to integrate the self-developed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip with a 5G chip in the future, creating a highly integrated, low-power wireless communication system. This will not only enhance Apple’s control but also optimize chip performance, improve wireless connection speeds, and increase stability.

Media reports indicate that Apple aims to reduce overall device power consumption and extend Battery life by tightly integrating various wireless communication components, which will help Apple manufacture lighter and thinner devices and develop new types of wearable technology.

Apple's actions are expected to impact Broadcom, as the company is one of Broadcom's largest customers, accounting for approximately 20% of its revenue. In response, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated during Thursday's Earnings Reports conference call that the company is in a multi-year partnership commitment with Apple. Reports also indicate that Apple is actively advancing its self-developed chip strategy and gradually reducing reliance on external suppliers, but it has not completely stopped collaboration, as it will continue to work with Broadcom in areas such as RF filters and Cloud Computing Service chips.

Notably, analysts point out that Apple plans to launch its first self-developed 5G modem in 2025, with a more advanced version expected in 2026, and an iterative modem in 2027 anticipated to achieve superior energy efficiency. Currently, all iPhones sold by Apple are equipped with Qualcomm modems for cellular connectivity, but with the introduction of the self-developed 5G chips, Apple is expected to gradually reduce its dependence on Qualcomm. The supply agreement between Apple and Qualcomm for 5G modems has been extended to 2026, providing ample time for Apple's research and deployment of its own 5G modems.
