After the opening, there was a decline due to concerns about the unexpected acceleration of the November Producer Price Index (PPI). The Dow fell further due to selling spurred by unexpectedly weak employment-related indicators and the decline of the managed healthcare company UnitedHealth (UNH). Nasdaq continued to decline due to concerns over rising long-term interest rates. Towards the end, the stock market expanded its losses and closed. By sector, Property Service & Development rose, while Autos & Auto Parts fell.
The media company Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) plans to split its TV cable and streaming businesses as part of a business restructuring, which was well received, leading to a rise in stock price. Mobile device company Apple (AAPL) is reported to be preparing to switch to its own chips by 2025, resulting in an increase in stock price. The semiconductor companies Broadcom (AVGO) and Qualcomm (QCOM), which currently supply chips to the company, experienced a decline. Intel (INTC), which is part of the semiconductor industry, saw its stock rise as reports indicated plans for its subsidiary Altera to go public.
Beverage manufacturer Coca-Cola (KO), food and beverage manufacturer PepsiCo (PEP), and energy drink company Celsius Holdings Inc (CELH) all saw their stock prices rise following upgrades to their investment ratings by analysts. Infrastructure services-related software company ServiceTitan (TTAN) went public on Nasdaq, starting trading at $101, exceeding its listing price of $71.
High-end furniture retailer RH (RH) announced its third-quarter earnings after the market closed. Its adjusted earnings per share exceeded expectations, and its outlook was well received, leading to buying in extended hours trading. Semiconductor company Broadcom (AVGO) also reported adjusted earnings per share for the fourth quarter that surpassed expectations and announced a quarterly dividend increase, resulting in buying activity.
