Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng recently stated in an interview with media such as the China News Service that the Macau SAR government is making every effort to promote the development of non-gaming elements. Macau is no longer a city primarily based on the gaming industry, with the goal of increasing the value added by non-gaming sectors to around 60% by 2028. It is gradually showing characteristics of diversified development.
The tourism industry undoubtedly best reflects this achievement. Data from the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau shows that the number of inbound tourists in 2023 exceeded 28 million, an increase of 3.9 times year-on-year. This number continued to grow this year, with nearly 26 million inbound tourists recorded in the first three quarters, representing a 30% year-on-year increase. Ho Iat Seng attributed the booming development of the tourism industry to the successful anticipation by the SAR government and the industry of changes in visitor demographics after societal normalization and their rapid adjustments.
