Shiba Inu, Pepe Or Bonk? Ranking Reddit's Most Popular Meme Coins

Benzinga ·  Dec 10 08:03

Retail investors are flocking to memecoins, with Reddit data revealing PEPE (CRYPTO: PEPE) as the current frontrunner in capturing retail mindshare, according to a recent analysis of cryptocurrency subreddit growth trends.

What Happened: The analysis, shared in a detailed thread on X on Dec. 5, highlights the importance of understanding retail investor psychology in the current market cycle.

The thread argues that retail investors are driven by factors such as financial nihilism, the allure of high-risk, high-reward opportunities, and the ease of access provided by platforms like Robinhood. The author states, "They view crypto as a way to 'get rich quick.'"

The analysis focused on subreddit member growth as a key indicator of retail interest. PEPE and BONK (CRYPTO: BONK) emerged as standout performers, with PEPE showing particularly strong growth following its Nov. 13 Robinhood listing.

"PEPE's Subreddit growth went parabolic after its Nov. 13 listing on Robinhood, outperforming the Subreddit growth of all other memecoins," the author observed.

The data also revealed the persistent influence of unit bias among retail investors. "Retail is drawn to tokens with low prices per unit," the analysis noted, with investors often boasting about owning large quantities of tokens rather than focusing on the dollar value of their positions.

PEPE's subreddit has become the most active among this cycle's memecoins, fueled by ambitious price targets.

"This has been fueled by the trending Subreddit narrative of 'PEPE to $1'—a 46,000x gain. While obviously unattainable, this moon narrative mirrors those that propelled DOGE and SHIB to massive heights," the author explained.

The analysis concludes that if these Reddit trends continue, subreddit data could serve as a valuable indicator of retail interest in cryptocurrencies. For now, PEPE appears to be the clear favorite among retail investors, with the potential for further growth as the Ethereum ecosystem gains momentum.

The author also notes that Dogwifhat (CRYPTO: WIF): lags behind Pepe and Bonk despite a listing on Robinhood on Nov. 25.

Similarly Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: SHIB) has seen slower subreddit growth compared to its historical performance.

What's Next: The analysis concludes that if these Reddit trends continue, subreddit data could serve as a valuable indicator of retail interest in cryptocurrencies.

For now, PEPE appears to be the clear favorite among retail investors, with the potential for further growth as the Ethereum ecosystem gains momentum.
