Guardforce AI Co., Limited's (NASDAQ:GFAI) Shares Bounce 48% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 10 18:45

Guardforce AI Co., Limited (NASDAQ:GFAI) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 48% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 49% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Guardforce AI may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Commercial Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Guardforce AI Has Been Performing

Guardforce AI could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Guardforce AI's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The lack of growth did nothing to help the company's aggregate three-year performance, which is an unsavory 4.0% drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 4.1% each year during the coming three years according to the sole analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 8.4% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Guardforce AI is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Guardforce AI's P/S Mean For Investors?

Guardforce AI's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As expected, our analysis of Guardforce AI's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
