This Portillo's Insider Reduced Their Stake By 46%

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 5 18:12

From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in Portillo's Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PTLO ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Portillo's Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President, Michael Osanloo, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$680k worth of shares at a price of US$10.29 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$10.61. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 46% of Michael Osanloo's holding. Michael Osanloo was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Portillo's insiders own 2.8% of the company, worth about US$22m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
