On Wednesday morning eastern time, Brian Thompson, CEO of unitedhealth group's insurance division, was fatally shot outside the hilton worldwide in Midtown Manhattan.
According to CNBC sources, the incident is believed to be a targeted attack. The suspect is described as a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and black sneakers (with white accents), carrying a gray backpack.
Following the shooting incident, unitedhealth group canceled the previously scheduled "investor day" event, and after an early morning rise of over 2.9% in unitedhealth (UNH) stock on Wednesday, the price retracted most of its gains.
Public information shows that the unitedhealth insurance company (unitedhealthcare), led by Thompson, is the largest private health insurance company in the usa, with revenue exceeding 281 billion dollars last year, accounting for more than two-thirds of unitedhealth group's total annual revenue in 2023.
Thompson's LinkedIn page shows that he joined unitedhealth insurance company in April 2004 after working for nearly seven years at the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and has worked there for over 20 years. He became the company's CEO in April 2021, having previously served as the chief executive officer of the insurance division's government programs.
A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot in front of 1335 Americas Avenue in Midtown Manhattan at 6:46 a.m. on Wednesday. However, the spokesperson did not confirm the identity of the man. The police report states that when emergency personnel arrived, the man had lost consciousness and had a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics transported the man to Mount Sinai West, but he was pronounced dead.
The police stated that no one has been arrested yet and the case is still under investigation. A hot dog vendor selling near hilton worldwide reported that he was present at 6:30 AM but heard no gunfire, only noticed a sudden surge of police. A security guard at hilton worldwide, who started work at 7:00 AM, said everything at the hotel appeared "quite normal."
Unitedhealth originally planned to hold an investor day event at hilton worldwide in New York. However, the company did not confirm that a shooting incident occurred during the event, but canceled it after confirming that an employee had encountered a "medical emergency." Staff from unitedhealth stated at the event:
"I am sorry, some people may know that we are dealing with a very serious medical situation involving a team member. For this reason, I'm afraid our event today must end early, and I hope everyone can understand."
