The company held a meeting on November 29, 2024, with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
In March 2022, the Fujitsu Group contributed $1 million to UNHCR for humanitarian assistance to those affected in Ukraine and its neighboring regions. Additionally, it was decided to donate 45 million yen for the purpose of utilizing this in educational support, including digital education, aimed at contributing to the impact indicator of the 2030 objective set in one of the essential contribution areas of our materiality, 'improving people's well-being,' which aims to provide ICT skills and education to over 12 million people. This meeting was an opportunity to express gratitude from Masayuki Kawai, the Secretary-General of the Japan Association for UNHCR, the official support window in Japan supporting UNHCR's activities, along with discussions on the potential for support through IT technology by our Chairman Eikichi Furuta and Executive Officer SEVP CHRO Hiroki Hiramatsu regarding the new donation.
The meeting between our company and UNHCR is the second, following a discussion in May 2024 with Kelly Clemens, the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, and our Executive Officer EVP CSSO Takashi Shanxi. This meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between our company and UNHCR, and during the 'Kids Come to Work Day' event held for Fujitsu Group employees and their families from July to August 2024, a workshop was conducted in cooperation with the Japan Association for UNHCR to teach children about the current situation of refugees.
Fujitsu will continue to work towards a sustainable future by collaborating with UNHCR and the Japan Association for UNHCR, sharing ideas for refugee support utilizing technology with a long-term perspective, and broadly cooperating towards problem-solving.
Comment from Masayuki Kawai, Secretary-General of the Japan Association for UNHCR.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Fujitsu Group for your continued interest in UNHCR's refugee assistance activities since your support for emergency humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and its neighboring regions in 2022.
Currently, the number of people forced to live in exile due to conflict and persecution exceeds 0.1 billion globally, with about 40% of them being children. With the intensifying international situation, many children are being deprived of learning opportunities, and international support is essential to restore places for learning as soon as possible. We extend our sincere thanks for your decision to donate to UNHCR's educational support.
As the situation surrounding refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide becomes prolonged and complex, the importance of partnerships between UNHCR and Japanese companies to realize 'refugee support by society as a whole' is increasing. We hope that through continued dialogue between the Fujitsu Group and UNHCR, partnerships for refugee support, including IT, education, and self-support, will expand and deepen.
