An Insider Of Sleep Number Picks Up 900% More Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 3 18:41

Sleep Number Corporation (NASDAQ:SNBR) shareholders (or potential shareholders) will be happy to see that insider Patrick Hopf recently bought a whopping US$654k worth of stock, at a price of US$14.53. That purchase boosted their holding by 900%, which makes us wonder if the move was inspired by quietly confident deeply-felt optimism.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sleep Number

Notably, that recent purchase by Patrick Hopf is the biggest insider purchase of Sleep Number shares that we've seen in the last year. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$15.67. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

While Sleep Number insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Sleep Number Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Sleep Number insiders own 4.9% of the company, worth about US$16m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Sleep Number Tell Us?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Sleep Number insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. At Simply Wall St, we've found that Sleep Number has 3 warning signs (2 are a bit unpleasant!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
