In the ADR market, Japanese stocks such as Tokyo Electron <8035>, Advantest <6857>, Disco <6146>, SoftBank Group <9984>, and Mitsui & Co. <8031> all rose compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while Japan Post Bank <7182>, Sony <6758>, Japan Post Holdings <6178>, Seven & i Holdings <3382>, and Japan Tobacco Inc <2914> declined, resulting in mixed overall performance. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price closed at 38,615 yen, up 145 yen from the Osaka daytime comparison.
The U.S. stock market had mixed performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 44,782.00, down 128.65 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 19,403.95, up 185.78 points. With important economic indicators such as employment statistics scheduled for release this week, adjustments intensified, resulting in a mixed start after the opening bell. The Dow faced caution due to rising long-term interest rates, geopolitical risks in the Middle East, and the prospect of a collapse of the French cabinet through a vote of no confidence, leading to a soft performance throughout the day. The Nasdaq was supported by the tech sector and traded steadily, breaking previous record highs. The market closed with mixed results.
On the 2nd in the New York foreign exchange market, the dollar-yen exchange rate rose to 150.35 yen, then fell to 149.08 yen before closing at 149.56 yen. A strong result exceeding expectations in U.S. November ISM manufacturing sentiment, October construction spending, and revised November manufacturing PMI led to a rise in long-term interest rates, making the dollar dominant. However, due to expectations of the Bank of Japan's early additional rate hikes, buying of the yen, as well as increased yen buying related to cross-yen transactions, led to the decline. Federal Reserve Board Governor Waller's statement leaning toward additional rate cuts at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in December strengthened selling pressure on the dollar. The euro-dollar pair fell from 1.0514 dollars to 1.0461 dollars and closed at 1.0499 dollars. Speculation about the passage of the budget and a possible resolution of a vote of no confidence in the French cabinet, along with the European Central Bank (ECB) being nearly certain to announce additional rate cuts at its regular board meeting next week, accelerated euro selling.
NY crude oil futures for January were mixed (NYMEX crude oil January futures closing price: $68.10, up $0.10).
