Financial news app learned that Elon Musk has requested a federal court to block OpenAI's "illegal" transformation into a for-profit entity, citing the urgent need to pause the accelerated dominance of this ChatGPT manufacturer to protect his own ai startup and the public.

In the latest court documents, Musk continues his months-long attack on OpenAI CEO Altman. Nine years ago, they co-founded the non-profit organization OpenAI with a mission to develop generative ai for social benefit.

Musk reiterated his earlier statement that OpenAI, since 2019, has received billions of dollars in support from Microsoft, violating its commitments to him and abandoning its founding purpose as a charity. He now states that without swift court intervention, stopping Altman's "giant" from crushing competitors will soon be too late.

A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that Musk's application "repeats the same baseless complaints" and "still has no legal basis."

According to reports from last month, Altman's company is in early discussions with the California Attorney General's Office on the procedures for changing the company's structure.

In February of this year, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a California court, withdrew it in June, and filed a lawsuit again in August at a federal court in Oakland, California.

The injunction he is currently seeking will put a halt to the restructuring of OpenAI at the end of the legal battle. He also asked the judge to prohibit OpenAI from reaching agreements with investors to not sponsor competitors, stating that this violates federal antitrust laws.

Musk's ai startup company xAI was established last year and was valued at $50 billion in the recent round of financing. Since May of this year, the company's value has more than doubled.
