The Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department announced today (November 29) that the new annual interest rate for tax bills from December 2, 2024 will change from the current 0.7167% to 0.5500%.

According to a report on the Intelligence Finance App, the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department announced today (November 29) that the new annual interest rate for tax bills will change from the current 0.7167% to 0.5500% starting from December 2, 2024. Under the new rate, interest of 0.0458 Hong Kong dollars can be earned per 100 Hong Kong dollars per month.

Interest on tax bills is calculated on a single interest basis. Interest is calculated from the date of purchase until the date of tax payment using the bill, on a monthly basis; interest can also be earned proportionally for periods less than a month. Interest is only calculated when tax bills are used to pay taxes. If the principal value of the tax bill is returned to the holder, no interest will be paid.

The interest rate on tax bills will be based on the average interest rate of 12-month fixed deposits of 100,000 Hong Kong dollars to 499,999 Hong Kong dollars from three note-issuing banks, and will be reviewed monthly.

The new interest rate will apply to all tax bills purchased on or after December 2, 2024. Tax bills purchased before December 2, 2024 will continue to earn interest at the rate on the day of purchase.
