Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa, Tokyo, President and Group CEO: Mitsuko Tottori, hereinafter referred to as "JAL") and NEC Corporation (Headquarters: Minato, Tokyo, Representative Director, President and CEO: Takayuki Morita, hereinafter referred to as "NEC") conducted a demonstration experiment of the "NEC Baggage Counting Solution" (Note 1, hereinafter referred to as "this solution"), which automatically analyzes the number and condition of carry-on luggage at the boarding gate by utilizing machine learning (AI). This solution, which is the first of its kind in the world (Note 2), will enable measures regarding carry-on luggage, one of the causes of flight delays, thus aiming to improve punctuality and ensure smooth boarding. Based on the results of the demonstration experiment, operational methods will be considered, and JAL plans to introduce this solution in the future.

【Background】
In recent years, as intelligence such as self-driving, electrification, and connected cars have increased, large and advanced in-vehicle software is required, as is the streamlining of fundamental development. Additionally, the concept of SDV (Software Defined Vehicles) has become widespread, and the importance of software development has further increased. Along with this, cooperation between cars and society is becoming more necessary, and initiatives utilizing cloud technology are becoming more essential. In addition, various social issues are becoming more visible, such as the difficulty of maintaining public transportation due to depopulation and the shortage of drivers in the logistics industry, and there is a greater demand for the creation of mobility services that use software to connect cars and the resolution of social issues.
NTT Data and Denso have been collaborating and cooperating, promoting initiatives in the software field towards the transformation of the automobile industry, including Denso's participation in NTT Data MSE, which is involved in software development, and the commencement of the industry-wide ecosystem construction of electric vehicle batteries by NTT Data and Denso in 2022.
When the amount of luggage brought into the aircraft is high, it may not fit in the storage compartments, requiring customers to take time to store their baggage, which can cause congestion in the aisle. Additionally, if the task of storing carry-on luggage in the cargo hold occurs after boarding starts, it can prolong the boarding process and be a factor in flight delays.

During the period from April to September 2024, the analysis accuracy of cabin baggage using this solution (detection accuracy and classification accuracy) at Gate 13 of Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) Terminal 1 was verified, along with the alert timing for notifying capacity overages in the cabin baggage storage compartments. The usefulness of this solution was subsequently evaluated.
1. Using camera footage captured at the boarding gate, machine learning technology (AI) is utilized to detect the cabin baggage carried by passengers.
2. Cabin baggage is classified according to pre-registered conditions, and the detected baggage's occupation of space in the cabin's baggage storage compartment is estimated in real time.
3. An alert is issued when the estimated load reaches a predetermined threshold.

[Results of the demonstration and future prospects]
This solution enables the collection and analysis of data regarding the occupation status of cabin baggage and the frequency of alert occurrences. As a result, specific measures can be implemented based on data to prevent departure delays caused by the storage and reloading of baggage into the cargo hold.
JAL will continue to utilize digital technology to ensure a smoother boarding process for customers and strive towards maximizing customer experience, including improving punctuality.
