FX168 Financial News (Europe) reported on Wednesday (November 27) that former NFL star Rob Gronkowski stated that his most successful investment ever was buying stocks of Apple Inc. ten years ago.
Gronkowski revealed in an interview with Fortune magazine that in 2014, he took the advice of a contractor who was building his house and bought stocks of Apple Inc.
"The person who built my house in Foxborough told me, 'Go buy Apple stocks, I'm telling you, this is the future,'" Gronkowski said.
"Every time I saw him, especially during the time we were building the house, he kept repeating, 'Buy Apple, buy Apple,'" he said. "So after he said it 50 times, I finally bought. Let me tell you, this was the most successful investment of my life."
Gronkowski stated that he decided to invest "wholeheartedly". He called his financial advisor and, based on the contractor's advice, bought $69,000 worth of Apple stocks.
At that time, Apple’s product plan included the upcoming iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 was a huge success due to the first large screen version (iPhone 6 Plus) being launched. Additionally, this was the year before Apple launched its first Apple Watch in April 2015.
Since Apple Inc. released the iPhone 6 on September 9, 2014, the price of Apple stocks has risen by 972%. If $69,000 had been invested in Apple stocks on that day, it would now be worth about $0.74 million. Gronkowski did not specify the exact date he first bought Apple stocks.
About two and a half years later, Gronkowski said he completely forgot that he had bought those stocks until he discovered their value had reached about $0.25 million. He sold part of the stocks and kept the rest.
So, I sold a portion of my investment worth $69,000, and to date, the apple stocks I hold are valued at over $0.6 million. It all comes from that investment I made in 2014 when I had no idea what I was doing, I just followed the advice of the person who built my house, and I am really grateful to him," Gronkowski said.
Gronkowski was selected 42nd overall in the 2010 NFL Draft and had a career that spanned 11 seasons, including 9 seasons with the New England Patriots and 2 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He is a four-time Super Bowl champion and earned about $70 million during his time in the NFL.
