Caixin News Agency, November 27th (Editor Xia Junxiong) According to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), after two consecutive years of decline, global smart phone sales will rebound strongly in 2024, but Apple's growth is weak, highlighting that its competitors are seizing more market share.
The IDC report states that global smart phone shipments are expected to increase by 6.2% to 1.24 billion units in 2024, ending two consecutive years of decline and achieving a strong rebound. However, iPhone shipments may only grow by 0.4% this year. In contrast, Android phone shipments are expected to grow by 7.6%, mainly focusing on the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, as well as the China market.
Nevertheless, Apple still has a significant advantage in terms of profit. The average selling price of the iPhone exceeds $1,000, while the average selling price of Android phones is about $295, less than one-third of the iPhone.
For next year, IDC predicts that iPhone shipments will increase by 3.1%, surpassing Android phones at 1.7%.
This report indicates that despite the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) bringing new opportunities, the recovery of the smart phone market in the post-COVID-19 era is not uniform.
IDC states that most of the growth in 2024 comes from long-suppressed demand and regions with low smartphone penetration rates.
Global smart phone shipments have not yet recovered to pre-COVID-19 levels, and IDC expects the growth rate in the coming years to not exceed single digits. The elongation of the replacement cycle, market saturation in developed economies, and the rapid growth of the second-hand phone trade are considered the main factors leading to the stagnation of the market.
IDC Research Director Nabila Popal said: "Although generative AI is still a hot topic and a top priority for many manufacturers, it has not yet had a significant impact on demand or driven a wave of upgrades. More investment is needed to increase consumer awareness and introduce a 'must-have' feature that will attract consumers and create a super cycle that everyone is eagerly anticipating."
