Semtech Insiders Benefit From Selling Stock At US$22.39

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 27 20:01

While Semtech Corporation (NASDAQ:SMTC) shareholders have had a good week with the stock up 34%, insiders can't say the same having sold stock over the past year. Had they waited, they might have been able to sell their stock at much higher prices and thereby received a better value on their investment.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Semtech

The insider, Sylvia D. Couder, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$358k worth of shares at a price of US$22.39 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$63.11, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 55% of Sylvia D. Couder's holding. Sylvia D. Couder was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 1.2% of Semtech shares, worth about US$49m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
