Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By LexinFintech Holdings Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:LX) Earnings Despite 37% Price Jump

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 27 18:36

LexinFintech Holdings Ltd. (NASDAQ:LX) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 37% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 127% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, LexinFintech Holdings may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.8x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 20x and even P/E's higher than 36x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

LexinFintech Holdings could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as LexinFintech Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 44%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 68% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 56% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 15%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that LexinFintech Holdings' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Shares in LexinFintech Holdings are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of LexinFintech Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
