On November 24, according to the Financial Associated Press (editor: Xia Junxiong), media reports citing sources indicate that the newly elected president of the usa, Trump, plans to form an investigative team in the Department of Justice to look for evidence of fraud in the 2020 election in key swing states. Trump also plans to fire the entire team of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith.
Trump lost to the current usa president Biden in the 2020 election, but he has consistently refused to acknowledge this result. Trump claims that the 2020 election was "a fraudulent, manipulated, and stolen election."
Trump previously faced four criminal lawsuits, which are the "hush money" case, Georgia election interference case, classified documents case, and federal election interference case. Among them, the classified documents case and the federal election interference case are lawsuits at the federal level in the usa.
The usa Attorney General Merrick Garland previously appointed Smith as Special Prosecutor, who filed two federal lawsuits against Trump. In the federal election interference case, Smith accused Trump of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump, however, describes this as political persecution against him.
Sources indicate that the plan to form an investigative team in the Department of Justice is still in its early stages and is not a priority. In contrast, cleaning up the Department of Justice is a more clearly defined goal.
Although Trump's plans for investigating election fraud in swing states remain unclear, some officials who defended the 2020 election stated that they are prepared for the possibility.
"Since there is no misconduct, we are certainly willing to cooperate with anyone who wants to investigate our work. But we hope they act with integrity and are fact-oriented, rather than agenda-driven," said Michigan Secretary of State, Democrat Jocelyn Benson. Michigan is one of the swing states in the usa.
Trump and his allies have made a series of accusations against Benson and others, including: allowing illegal ballots (such as those from non-citizens, deceased individuals, or residents of other states) to be counted; unlawfully altering election rules during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to fraud; and preventing Republican observers from supervising the voting or counting process.
Sources revealed that the investigation into election fraud in the 2020 election may be conducted by prosecutors appointed by Trump in various swing states, but it could also be assigned to a special task force or special counsel.
