MAHB's October Passenger Traffic Hit 11 Million, Up 10.4%

Malaysian Airports Holdings Berhad's airport network for October recorded 11 million in passenger movements which is an increase of 10.4% compared to October 2023.

The international sector partly drove growth accounting for 53% of total passenger movements surpassing the pre-pandemic market share by 3% percentage points. Domestic passenger movements recorded 5.2million passengers, continuing to grow above the 80% of the pre-pandemic levels.

The group noted that passenger movements in Malaysia continued to grow steadily, driven by new airline operations and airline's introduction to new destinations from six international and domestic airports with a total combination of 34 additional weekly flight frequencies. Batik Air Malaysia (seven weekly frequencies) from Penang International Airport to Jakarta and launched new flights from Subang Airport to Kota Bharu (seven weekly frequencies), AirAsia (four weekly frequencies) also from Penang International Airport to Shenzhen, and from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Amritsar (four weekly frequencies). In addition, Jeju Air introduced a new route from Kota Kinabalu International Airport to Busan (six weekly frequencies) and Scoot launched new flights from Malacca Airport to Singapore (five weekly frequencies).

The overall average load factor increased by 4.3 percentage points for October 2024 over October 2023, reflecting strong travel demand amid the current challenges in the industry including delays in new aircraft deliveries and spare parts constraints. International passenger movements from Northeast Asia and South Asia grew by 2% and 4% over 2023, respectively. In the Southeast Asia region, Singapore, Jakarta, Bali, and Don Mueang continued to record the highest year-to-date in passenger movements from and into Malaysia by 28%. Domestic movements in October 2024 recorded 3.6million passengers, reaching 84.7% of prepandemic levels, with an average load factor of 80.5%

Istanbul Sabiha Gocken passenger movements grew by 5.3% over October 2023, reaching 3.5million and exceeding 2019 figures by 11.5%. The international and domestic sectors grew by 8.4% and 1.9%, respectively year-over-year, recording 1.9 million and 1.6 million passenger movements, respectively. There were 16 new weekly flight frequencies in October operated by Pegasus to Bremen, Germany (three weekly flights), Dublin, Ireland (two weekly flights) and by Ajet to Sham El Sheikh, Egypt (five weekly fights), Hurghada, Egypt (five weekly flights) and Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina (one weekly flight) in October.
