At the closing on the 19th, the number of advancing stocks of Nikkei average constituent stocks was 154, declining stocks were 68, and unchanged stocks were 3.
The U.S. market on the 18th was mixed. The Dow Jones closed at 43,389.60, down 55.39 points, while the Nasdaq ended at 18,791.81, up 111.69 points. It was lackluster with various movements after opening. The unexpected improvement in the November NAHB Housing Market Index and persistent growth expectations supported the market, but the Dow was pressured by profit-taking, leading to a weak performance throughout the day. The Nasdaq was supported by the rise of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, lower long-term interest rates, and anticipation of semiconductors NVIDIA's earnings, resulting in an increase. It closed in a mixed manner.
Due to the mixed performance of the US market, the Tokyo market started trading quietly. The Nikkei average started at the previous day's closing level, but with domestic earnings reports mostly completed and waiting for the earnings reports of the US semiconductor giant Nvidia, there was a cautious mood leading to a narrow trading range. The exchange rate was relatively stable around 154 yen to the dollar, which also influenced cautious trading activity, resulting in quiet movements in the latter half of the session.
The Nikkei average closing price was 38,414.43 yen, up 193.58 yen (+0.51%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.83 billion shares. The trading value was 3.806 trillion yen. By industry, nonferrous metals, banks, insurance, transportation equipment, securities and commodity futures trading, etc., rose, while services, electricity and gas, pulp and paper, air transport, and other products declined. The number of advancing stocks in the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market accounted for 65%, while declining stocks accounted for 30%.
