At the closing on the 15th, the number of rising stocks of Nikkei constituents was 117, the number of declining stocks was 106, and the number of unchanged stocks was 2.
The U.S. stock market fell on the 14th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 43,750.86, down 207.33 points, and the Nasdaq ended trading at 19,107.65, down 123.07 points. It opened slightly higher after favorable long-term interest rate declines, followed by confirmation of persistent inflation in the October Producer Price Index (PPI) and indications of labor market strength in new jobless claims, leading to an increase in long-term interest rates and a subsequent market decline. Federal Reserve Board Governor Kuglar mentioned the possibility of refraining from rate cuts, and towards the end, Chairman Powell stated that there is no need for aggressive rate cuts as the economy is strong, leading to an expanded decline and closure.
The decline in U.S. stocks and the yen's depreciation against the dollar were taken into account, leading to a buying dominant start in the Tokyo market. While there were scenes of the Nikkei briefly recovering to the 39,000 yen range, buying did not persist, resulting in a narrowing of the gains. With notable increases in bank stocks like Mizuho FG <8411>, the TOPIX index appeared relatively stronger. In the afternoon, the Nikkei gradually reduced its gains, closing at a low for the second consecutive day.
The Nikkei average at the close was 38,642.91 yen, up 107.21 yen (+0.28%) from the previous day. Trading volume on the TSE Prime Market was 2.188 billion shares. The trading value was 4.6014 trillion yen. In terms of industry sectors, marine shipping, mining, electricity and gas, banks, and transportation equipment increased, while services, other financials, nonferrous metals, real estate, and construction declined. The TSE Prime Market had 49% of stocks increase and 46% decrease.
