Rakuten Group Inc. (hereinafter "Rakuten") operates one of the largest golf course reservation sites in Japan, "Rakuten GORA." Together with Rakuten's research and development organization, "Rakuten Institute of Technology," and the Aoki Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Keio University, a beta version of a swing analysis function utilizing AI to diagnose golf swing movements has been developed and is now available on the smart phone app "Rakuten Golf Score Management App."

The three parties have developed this function with the aim of helping a wide range of golfers, from beginners striving for unique skill improvement to seasoned players, identify challenges necessary for improving their swings and motivating them to take golf lessons. Users can analyze and visualize checkpoints such as posture, hand position, and shaft angle at each phase from address to finish, along with AI analysis of user skeletal estimation and club position estimation, allowing for a multifaceted review of evaluation results. By simply launching the "Rakuten Golf Score Management App" on a smart phone, recording their swing, and uploading the video, users can confirm swing movements through total evaluations out of 100 points, diagnosis of swing trajectory, balance evaluation of each movement using radar charts, etc. Moreover, by easily comparing the latest swing videos with model videos and past analysis videos, improvement points can be clearly visualized, making it possible to assist in training for achieving ideal shots.
Launched in May 2021, the "Rakuten Golf Score Management App" is a free smart phone app that comprehensively supports rounds. In addition to score input and management for rounds, it includes a wide range of features such as course confirmation using GPS course maps and communication among round participants, with total downloads exceeding 2.8 million. With the newly added AI-powered swing analysis feature, the app's convenience has greatly expanded beyond just golf rounds. The three parties will continue to collaborate to improve further functionalities based on various feedback from users and work towards the official version release.
Rakuten GORA has been providing various services, including searching and booking golf courses, searching for golf schools and driving ranges, and the Rakuten Golf Score Management App. Going forward, services will continue to expand, proposing a wide range of ways to enjoy golf.
Key functions of the Rakuten Golf Score Management App for swing analysis.
Analysis of 41 check points across 9 swing phases.
When a swing video is recorded and uploaded via the app, AI detects the 9 swing phases from address to finish. For each detected swing phase, it estimates the user's body structure and club position, using this data to analyze check points such as posture, hand position, shaft angle, and head position. The results screen allows users to toggle between all 41 check points for each swing phase, clearly identifying areas for improvement to approach the ideal swing. Users can select from driver, fairway wood, utility, and iron clubs, and can also choose their dominant hand.

Display of overall evaluation and main actions on the radar candlestick.
On the overall evaluation screen, based on AI analysis, scores out of 100 and the balance of movements in 5 important categories for golf swing, such as "posture", "impact", and "hand and arm movement", can be displayed on a 5-point radar candlestick. Users can utilize scores as target values for swing improvement and easily check their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, swing path diagnostics such as "inside-out" and "inside-in" are possible based on club positions before and after impact.

Comparison with models and past swings.
In the swing comparison screen, by selecting swing videos from the built-in models or videos analyzed by this function, you can easily compare the differences with the model videos and improvements from your past swings. Both still images and videos can be chosen, and the analysis lines displayed for each checkpoint in still images can also be used for comparison.
