Promote conservation of the marine environment and biodiversity by positioning it as an important issue
On October 29, we announced the “Nature Positive (Note 2) Declaration” called for by the 2030 Biodiversity Framework Realization Conference (Note 1), Secretariat: Ministry of the Environment, hereafter, J-GBF). Also, on November 13, we participated in the “30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity (Note 3),” with 17 industry, private sector, and government organizations, including the Ministry of the Environment, as founders.
In the “Kunming Montreal Biodiversity Framework” adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) in December 2022, it was decided that nature positivity will be realized by 2030 as a short-term goal for a world in harmony with nature, which is the 2050 Vision. Based on this decision, J-GBF is promoting cooperation with the participation of all sectors in Japan, such as countries, local public bodies, businesses, citizens, and NGOs and youth, to achieve international goals and domestic strategies.
The “Nature Positive Declaration” is a declaration where stakeholders express their activities as a first step towards realizing nature positivity, and participation in the 30by30 Alliance means actively promoting the 30by30 goal, which is positioned as one of the goals for realizing nature positivity.
We position “marine environment and biodiversity conservation” as one of the environmental issues to be addressed in particular, and are striving to preserve biodiversity. We believe that the forest restoration project “Yunomori,” which handles environmental DNA sampling and forest maintenance in the open ocean, which we are working on, is in line with efforts aimed at realizing nature positivity, and announced the “Nature Positive Declaration.”
Regarding the “30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity,” we aim to register “Yunomori” in the OECM (Note 4), which opened in 2024/5, and by working on forest restoration through “Yunomori,” we will achieve the 30by30 target and contribute to the realization of nature positivity.
