Over the past week, the decentralized social media application Bluesky in the usa has gained more than 1.25 million new users, indicating that after the presidential election, some social media users are changing their usage habits and leaving Elon Musk's platform X.
The influx of users into Bluesky indicates that the app is positioning itself as an alternative to X and Meta's Threads. The company stated on Wednesday that most new users are from the usa, Canada, and the united kingdom.
Bluesky's CEO Jay Graber stated in a statement, "We are excited to welcome everyone looking for a better social media experience."
Despite the surge in users, Bluesky's total user count is still only a small fraction of its competitors. The Seattle-based startup claims to have 15.2 million users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated last October that Threads has nearly 0.275 billion monthly active users. In May of this year, Musk claimed that X has 0.6 billion monthly active users, but data released last month by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower showed that X's monthly user count is about 0.318 billion.
Bluesky was created in 2019 as an internal project at Twitter, when Jack Dorsey was still the CEO of Twitter. Bluesky does not display ads and has not yet formed a business model. It became an independent company in 2021. Dorsey stated in May of this year that he is no longer a member of Bluesky's board of directors.
The internet plus-related traffic and monitoring service company Similarweb wrote in a blog on Tuesday, "Journalists, politicians, and news enthusiasts have also been discussing Bluesky as a better alternative to X than Threads."
Some users who have newly created accounts on Bluesky stated that they are using the service because of Musk and his support for elected president Donald Trump.
"It is shocking that Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a propaganda machine for Trump, filled with misinformation and disinformation," a user posted on Bluesky.
This is the second significant increase in the number of Bluesky users over the past few months.
Bluesky stated that it gained 2 million new users in September after the Supreme Court of Brazil suspended X's business in the country for failing to comply with regional content review policies and not designating a local representative.
