Senstar Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:SNT) Surges 49% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 13 21:31

The Senstar Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:SNT) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 49%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 98% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Senstar Technologies' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Electronic industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.1x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Senstar Technologies Performed Recently?

For instance, Senstar Technologies' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Senstar Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.4%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 59% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.0% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we are not surprised that Senstar Technologies is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Senstar Technologies' P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite Senstar Technologies' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Senstar Technologies revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
