Caution near record highs and lack of new buying catalysts led to profit-taking and a subsequent decline in market. Throughout the day, concerns about improving economic outlook and rising long-term interest rates eased by speculation of rate cuts kept the market soft. The market closed weakly as caution loomed ahead of Consumer Price Index (CPI) release tomorrow.
In response to the decline of US stocks, the Tokyo market started trading slightly in favor of selling. Due to increased caution regarding escalating trade friction stemming from personnel reports of the upcoming Trump administration, the Nikkei average widened its decline steadily from the opening, breaking below 39,000 yen for the first time since the 6th. While Tokyo Electron Ltd.<8035> saw a significant increase in stock prices based on earnings reports, a wide range of industries such as automobiles were sold off. The market continued to steadily widen its losses in the afternoon session, resulting in breaking below 39,000 yen on a closing basis for the first time since the 5th.
The Nikkei average at the closing bell fell by 654.43 yen compared to the previous day, closing at 38,721.66 yen, a decrease of 1.66%. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 2.39 million shares. The trading value was 4.907 trillion yen. By industry, precision instruments, other products, transportation equipment, other finance, pharmaceuticals, etc., declined, while petroleum and coal, retail, marine shipping, fisheries and forestry, and aviation rose.
