Those Who Invested in Option Care Health (NASDAQ:OPCH) Five Years Ago Are up 74%

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 12 21:47

It hasn't been the best quarter for Option Care Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPCH) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 25% in that time. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 74%, less than the market return of 108%.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years of share price growth, Option Care Health moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so investors may expect to see an increasing share price. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. In fact, the Option Care Health stock price is 15% lower in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 39% each year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -5% a year for three years.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. A Different Perspective

Investors in Option Care Health had a tough year, with a total loss of 20%, against a market gain of about 39%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 12% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Option Care Health better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Option Care Health you should know about.
