Since 2016, Tokyo Century has set “Contributing to the Realization of a Circular Economy and Society” as its management philosophy. As social decarbonization progresses toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, what kind of changes can be expected in society 10 years from now? Five employees from different departments and generations express their feelings with a single flip. The roundtable discussion where opinions were exchanged with President and CEO Takaichi Baba was published in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
In this article, we asked all participants about their impressions after completing the roundtable discussion.
Dissemination and collection of information from rural areas
Sales Division 2 Fukuoka Sales Department Mr. Tatsuya Ishii
――Is there anything that left an impression on you during the roundtable discussion?
Ishii
I chose the words “popular hope and love” to describe the future 10 years from now. It was shown in red and blue using the colors on our website, and it left an impression on me that President Baba saw this flip and commented “veins and arteries.” Since it was expressed by imagining the “heart,” I felt charismatic in the remarks that instantly captured the overall picture of the story and captured the opinions of the employees.
――Please share your impressions of talking with people from different departments and generations.
Ishii
At this roundtable discussion, I got the impression that everyone was strongly communicating the direction the company is aiming for and what they want to do. While we value business development and dissemination from rural areas, I would like to be aware once again that we can acquire information on our own headquarters and deepen our knowledge.
Aiming to provide value beyond finance
Mr. Ryosuke Ishikawa, Business Advisory Department, Lease Sales Support Division
――Please tell us your impressions after the roundtable discussion.
Ishikawa
While talking with people from different departments and generations, I came to a new realization that if they are involved in different fields, their work is so different that I think it's a different company. I have a desire to work globally in the future, so the story that not only work skills but also communication skills will be important in overseas business left an impression on me.
――Did you change your way of thinking before and after joining the company?
Ishikawa
Before I joined the company, I imagined working at Tokyo Century in the image of a typical working person, thinking that I would do the work I was given first. Actually, in the 3 years since I joined the company, I had the feeling that I was thinking about things and moving my work. As I have felt on a daily basis, I was able to recognize once again at this roundtable discussion that new value cannot be created without going beyond the financial domain.
Good ventilation makes it rewarding
Specialty Sales Division 1 Marine Sales Department Mami Ouchi
――What kind of feelings have you had since you changed jobs?
Ouchi
My previous job was a general job at a bank, and when I changed jobs, I became a general sales position. Over the past 2 years since I joined the company, there were moments where I felt uneasy about whether I would be able to contribute to the company, but I spent my time always being aware that there was anything I could do. While talking with all of you, I once again felt the importance of consolidating individual innovation as an organization.
――How was it when you talked with the president?
Ouchi
After participating in this roundtable discussion, I felt that our company has many opportunities to communicate with management. We recognize that it is an environment where it is easy for management policies to penetrate, and employees' thoughts can easily reach management, and since they can realize their own opinions and feel rewarding, it is an environment where employee loyalty to the company is easy to develop.
“ESG” from a different perspective on corporate growth
International Sales Division CSI Leasing, Inc. secondment manager Daisuke Iimori
――Please tell us any insights or lessons you learned during the roundtable discussion.
Iimori
ESG is an acronym for environment (environment), social (society), and governance (governance), and it was impressive that President Baba added a new perspective of “earning (profit), strong (strength), and growth (growth).” It made me think again that in order for a company to survive in the medium to long term, it is necessary to grow while raising strong profits.
Furthermore, it was impressive that President Baba viewed the company as a “place of self-realization,” a “park,” so to speak. I understand that the reason behind this is the idea that individuals are required to have their own intentions and proactively carve out their lives. Also, the fact that “empowerment (transfer of authority)” was mentioned as a keyword left an impression on me. In organizations where the average age is rising, I understand that creating an environment where young employees can play an active role is also essential for corporate growth.
Don't forget to smile and go to a company you can be proud of
Corporate Planning Division DX Strategy Department Shimodaira Ryoko
――What were you thinking about during the roundtable discussion?
Shimohira
As I thought about the next 10 years, I looked back on my company life up until now. I joined the company as a new graduate, and both the company and myself have changed with the times, but I feel that I am still working without forgetting to smile even now. I want to keep smiling as before, and pass on to the next generation a state where they can have hope for change and how the future will change in the future.
――What are your expectations for the Tokyo Century in the future?
Shimohira
I want Tokyo Century to be a company that children and grandchildren can take pride in saying, “My mother used to work here.” I may have reached retirement age in 10 years, but after listening to everyone's opinions at the roundtable discussion, I was convinced that it would surely be a company I can be excited about even 10 years from now.
