DOSM: YTD 2024 Construction Work Valued At RM117 Billion

In the first nine months of 2024, the Construction sector registered total work valued at nearly RM117 billion, reflecting a roughly 19% growth, compared to the 9% growth within the same year-to-date period (up to September) in 2023, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in a press statement circulated on Nov 11.

In the third quarter1 of 2024, the value of work done in the Construction sector reached about RM41 billion, marking a substantial growth of nearly 23% year-on-year, mainly attributable to the Special Trade activities sub-sector which demonstrated accelerated growth.

Of the RM41 billion in work done value recorded in the quarter from July to September this year, RM15 billion was attributed to the public sector, primarily in the Construction of roads and railways and utility projects.

In Q3 2024, the value of work done for private Non-residential buildings and Residential Buildings sub-sectors was around RM21 billion. The Special trade activities summed up to nearly RM5 billion, largely in sites preparation, electrical installation, and plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation activities.

The private sector remained as the main impetus for the growth in the third quarter, contributing to over RM26 billion or nearly 64% of the total value.

Nearly 60% of the construction projects were situated in Selangor, Johor, Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) and Sarawak. The value of construction work completed in Selangor amounted to more than RM9 billion. Meanwhile, Johor ranked second with construction work valued at nearly RM7 billion. The value of work completed in Wilayah Persekutuan was nearly RM5 billion while for Sarawak about RM4 billion.
