As of the closing at 5:00 PM, the Nikkei average constituent stocks had 145 stocks rising, 78 stocks falling, and 2 stocks remaining unchanged.
The U.S. stock market on the 4th fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 257.59 points at 41,794.60, and the Nasdaq closed at 18,179.98, down 59.93 points. Pre-election uncertainty led to profit-taking, causing a decline after the opening. The Dow remained weak throughout the day. The Nasdaq was supported by a drop in long-term interest rates and Nvidia's rise, halting the decline.
In the Tokyo market after the consecutive holidays, there was a rebound ahead of last weekend's drop of over 1,000 yen. The Nikkei average, driven by buying back, expanded its gains up to the 38,600 yen level. However, with tonight's US presidential election voting and the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 6th - 7th, the upside pressure remains heavy, and it stayed at the halfway retracement level of the previous day's decline. Additionally, due to the extension of the closing trading time by 30 minutes starting today, the trading value in the prime market reached the 4 trillion yen level despite the market returning after the holidays.
The Nikkei average at the close was 42.23 yen higher than the previous day (+1.11%) at 38,474.90 yen. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1,896.58 million shares. The trading value was 4 trillion, 48.4 billion yen. By industry, securities and commodity futures trading, nonferrous metals, wholesale, other financial, and metal products rose, while other products, air transportation, services, electricity and gas, petroleum and coal declined. The number of advancing issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 59%, while declining issues were 37%.
