Shimadzu Corporation has invested in RhinoFlux Corporation (Kyoto City), a startup originating from Kyoto University, through the corporate venture capital (CVC) fund "Shimadzu Future Innovation Fund" (hereinafter referred to as Shimadzu FIF). The company is developing a plant that efficiently generates electricity while recovering high-purity carbon dioxide from biomass resources.
In recent years, biomass power generation as a renewable energy source for achieving carbon neutrality has been attracting attention. However, there are challenges such as transportation costs for waste materials used in power generation. RhinoFlux holds the technology developed by Associate Professor Ryuichi Ashida of the Graduate School of Engineering at Kyoto University, which involves the oxidation-reduction reaction of metal ion solutions from biomass resources to recover electricity and over 99.9% pure carbon dioxide without burning biomass resources. It is expected that by using container-type small-scale bioenergy-carbon capture plants that can be installed near the source of resources, the challenges of traditional biomass power generation can be addressed.
Shimadzu Corporation highly values RhinoFlux's bioenergy-carbon capture technology and management team, and has invested from Shimadzu FIF. Through this investment, the company will support their research and business development, as well as contribute to achieving carbon neutrality.
