Shiseido Creative's “The Beauty That Exists” won the Grand Prix at the Red Dot Design Award 2024

At the Red Dot Design Award 2024, which is one of the world's top three design awards, a window display work created by Shiseido Creative Co., Ltd., won the Grand Prix. The award was highly praised for the fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern design, the fact that it symbolizes the inner beauty of crafts and individuals, and the special and unique experience brought about by accurate geometric forms and advanced handmade techniques.
“The Beauty That Exists” has also won the 103rd New York ADC Award Bronze Award, the Japan Space Design Award 2024 Grand Prix, and the FRAME Awards 2024 Window Display of the Year.

What is the Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Design Award is an international design award established in Germany in 1955, and along with the German iF Design Award and the American International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), it is called the world's top three design awards. “The Beauty That Exists” received the highest award “Grand Prix,” where only 6 works were selected from all categories.
Furthermore, it was the first time since the “Shiseido Design Department,” the predecessor of Shiseido Creative Co., Ltd., was established in 1916 to win the Grand Prix.

Explanation of the work

This is a window display of the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building in Ginza 8-chome, Tokyo. Based on the theme of traditional crafts, we created trees and wreaths together with craftsmen in Kyoto. The motif is a “Japanese umbrella.” In particular, we focus on the element “bamboo bone and decorative thread.” The design, which dared to expose the “bamboo frame and decorative thread,” which is originally inside an umbrella and can only be seen by the user, expresses Shiseido's corporate attitude of exploring the beauty that exists there and working on a new definition of beauty.

It was an unexpected pleasure to receive the Grand Prix at the Red Dot Design Award, which is a global design award. The current window display “The Beauty That Exists” was designed with the desire to express the pure and fundamental beauty hidden in the traditional craft called Japanese umbrellas. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the judges and everyone involved who appreciated this initiative. With this encouragement, I would like to continue working on work that touches on the essence of beauty.
