Japanese stocks of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), when compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (at an exchange rate of 1 dollar to 152.98 yen), rose with Japan Post Holdings <6178>, KDDI Corporation <9433>, Mizuho Financial Group <8411>, Disco Corporation <6146>, Hoya Corporation <7741>, Nippon Electric Glass <6594>, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. <8801>, and others showing a general buying preference. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price was 455 yen higher than the Osaka daytime comparison at 38,575 yen.
The U.S. stock market rebounded. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 42,052.19, up 288.73 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,239.92, up 144.77 points. The market was bought into on expectations of interest rate cuts following the employment statistics, leading to an increase after the opening. Positive corporate earnings and new funds flowing in at the beginning of the month also supported the market, causing it to rise. Despite the rise in long-term interest rates, the gains of online retail Amazon (AMZN) and semiconductor Intel (INTC) provided support, leading the Nasdaq to perform well throughout the day and close positively.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 1st, the dollar-yen pair fell to 151.80 yen, then rose to 153.09 yen, and closed at 152.98 yen. Following the October U.S. employment statistics, where the growth in non-farm payrolls fell below expectations, remaining at its lowest growth level since 2020, and with downward revisions to employment figures for the previous two months, the speculation of additional rate cuts intensified. This led to a decrease in bond yields and a boost in selling pressure on the dollar. Subsequently, the revised October Manufacturing PMI unexpectedly increased, and the Paying Price component of the October ISM Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose significantly. Furthermore, with a focus on next week's presidential election, long-term interest rates reversed course to rise, leading to increased buying of the dollar. Risk appetite favored selling the yen. The Euro-dollar pair rose to 1.0905 dollars, then fell to 1.0832 dollars, closing at 1.0835 dollars.
On the 1st, NY crude oil futures for December inched higher (NYMEX crude oil December contract closing price: 69.49, up 0.23).
