The U.S. stock market rebounded. The Dow Jones rose 288.73 points to 42,052.19, and the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,239.92, up 144.77 points.
Boosted by the expectation of rate cuts following the employment statistics, the market rose after a strong start. Positive corporate earnings, increased buying sentiment, and new inflows of funds at the beginning of the month supported the market's upward trend. Despite a rise in long-term interest rates, the gains were supported by the rise of online retailer Amazon (AMZN) and semiconductor Intel (INTC), leading Nasdaq to a steady positive close. In terms of sectors, retail and semiconductor/manufacturing equipment rose, while the utilities industry declined.
Semiconductor Intel (INTC) announced yesterday after market close that its fourth-quarter revenue forecast exceeded market expectations and rose. Rental car company Avis Budget Group Inc (CAR) indicated strong year-end demand in its third-quarter earnings and was bought. Cable TV company Charter Communications (CHTR) reported increased revenue and profit in the third quarter earnings due to strong performance in its residential mobile services and internet services segment, causing the stock to rise. Real estate intermediary services company RE/MAX Holdings (RMAX) fell as its quarterly earnings were below expectations.
The VIX index, which indicates investors' fear factor, dropped to 21.16.
