Financial Services, November 1 (Editor Xia Junxiong) Less than a week until the general election, former US President and Republican presidential candidate Trump sued CBS (CBS) and claimed 10 billion dollars in compensation. Trump said that CBS carried out deceptive acts during an interview with US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Harris in order to interfere with the US election.
The 2024 US election will be held on November 5, local time. In addition to the presidency, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the Senate seats will also be re-elected to form the 119th US Congress.
Trump filed a lawsuit in the federal court for the Northern District of Texas on Thursday (10/31) local time and requested a jury trial. He also sought compensation of at least $10 billion from CBS to cover the TV station's “continuing false, misleading, and deceptive conduct,” and to cover the lawyers' fees and associated costs of this lawsuit, as well as other remedies that the court deems just and appropriate.
The lawsuit brought by Trump is related to Harris's previous interview with CBS “60 Minutes.”
In the teaser clip of this exclusive interview, the host asked Harris, why is Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu unwilling to listen to the opinions of the US government? She said at the time, “The work we have done has partly prompted Israel to take some actions in the region. These actions are the result of a combination of factors, including our advocacy of what should happen in the region.”
Harris' response was ridiculed by Republicans and their supporters, who thought her statement was long and vague.
However, when Harris' interview was officially broadcast, her answers to the same questions were more brief and powerful. In the official program, Harris replied, “We will continue to pursue America's clear position on this issue, which is to demand an end to the war.”
This drew heavy criticism from the Republican camp, who believed that CBS presented different answers through editing to maintain Harris's image.
Some called on CBS to release the full transcript of the interview, while CBS rejected the request on the grounds of the First Amendment to the Constitution. CBS also argued that they did not tamper with the interview and did not conceal what Harris was saying in response to the controversial questions.
Naturally, Trump will not rest easy. His lawyer said in the lawsuit that CBS is trying to reverse the situation as the US election comes to an end to benefit Harris and the Democratic Party. Trump's lawyers also claimed that CBS's move violated Texas laws prohibiting commercial fraud.
Faced with Trump's indictment, CBS responded that Trump's claims were unfounded.
It is worth mentioning that Trump criticized CBS several times during the campaign and threatened that if elected president, he would revoke CBS's broadcasting license.
