Rakuten Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Rakuten") has obtained SBT certification based on the international climate change initiative "SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) (Note 1)". As a result, Rakuten's reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions (hereinafter referred to as "this target") have been certified to be based on scientific evidence to keep the increase in global average temperature well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels, as well as to keep it below 1.5°C as per the Paris Agreement.

In this target, the scope has been expanded to include not only greenhouse gas emissions from company activities (Scope1, 2), but also greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire supply chain, including trading partners and collaborating companies (Scope3).

In addition, SBTi provides methods for setting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and minimum requirements by sector within the business field. Rakuten, as it conducts electricity retail business within group services, has also set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets per unit of electricity sold, complying with the guidance for the electrical utilities sector in Scope3.

Details of this target

Scope1

Emissions

Direct emissions of greenhouse gases by oneself

- Reduce emissions by 99.7% from 2022 to 2032

Scope2

Emissions

Indirect emissions associated with the use of electricity, heat, and steam supplied by other companies

Scope3

Emissions

Indirect emissions excluding Scope 1 and Scope 2

- Reduce emissions by 30.0% from 2022 levels by 2032

- Reduce emissions per unit of electricity sold by 76.8% from 2022 levels by 2032

Under its mission of 'empowering people and society through innovation,' Rakuten is working on improving energy efficiency, introducing and expanding the use of renewable energy. By 2023, the entire group, including consolidated subsidiaries, has achieved carbon neutrality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (note 2) to practically zero and has launched the 'Go Green Together' project calling for an environmentally friendly future for consumers in April 2022, proposing green living and shopping opportunities. Additionally, the dedicated site 'Rakuten Green Empowerment' is currently available, introducing Rakuten's efforts to enhance energy efficiency and opportunities for reducing environmental impact through consumers' use of Rakuten services.

Moving forward, towards achieving this goal, Rakuten will further reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire supply chain, including partners and cooperating companies, aiming to realize a sustainable future with customers, partner companies, local communities, stakeholders, and employees.

(Note 1) SBTi is an international climate change initiative established jointly by the United Nations Global Compact, CDP (an international NGO working on climate change, etc.), WRI (World Resources Institute), and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).
(Note 2) Total of Scope 1 emissions and Scope 2 emissions, calculated and reported in accordance with the international standards of the 'GHG Protocol' when determining and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and obtaining third-party verification.
In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the group is working on energy saving and renewable energy introduction across the board, and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be reduced by investing in carbon offset activities.
For the achievement of "2023 Carbon Neutrality" for the entire group, please refer to the following press release.
