According to sources, the troubled Boeing company has disbanded its global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) department, becoming the latest well-known company to adjust its DEI policies, with the new CEO implementing broader reforms across the company's workforce.
Insiders revealed that employees of boeing's DEI office will be merged with another human resources team focused on talent and employee experience. On Thursday, boeing's vice president Sara Liang Bowen left the company, where she had led the now disbanded department.
In her farewell post on social media, Bowen wrote: "This team has achieved so much - sometimes not perfect, but never easy - and dreams of doing more."
boeing's new CEO Kelly Ortberg is streamlining the company's operations and cutting the executive team, as part of the company's 10% layoff plan. This shift comes as large American corporations are facing increasing pressure to cancel or downplay their efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
While boeing's workforce has traditionally been dominated by white men, under the leadership of former CEO Dave Calhoun who stepped down in early August, the company has intensified its efforts to recruit more black and other minority employees.
Activist Robby Starbuck, who opposes DEI, has persuaded toyota motor and harley-davidson to scale back their DEI efforts. He mentioned that he contacted boeing's new CEO Ortberg and board chairman Steve Mollenkopf earlier this month via email, reminding them that he was considering launching an online campaign against their diversity initiatives.
boeing stated in a release: "boeing remains committed to recruiting and retaining top talent, and creating an inclusive work environment where every teammate around the world can perform at their best while supporting the company's mission."
The company also stated that it prohibits discriminatory recruitment practices, and maintains a "performance-based system aimed at encouraging equal opportunities, not equal outcomes."
Boeing's efforts in diversification have been ridiculed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Earlier this year, Musk linked the grounding of the 737 Max 9 aircraft to safety issues in Boeing and United Airlines' diversification recruitment plans amidst the developments surrounding Boeing's safety issues.
When retweeting a post from a user X, Musk wrote, "Do you want to fly on a plane where they prioritize DEI recruitment over your safety?" The user pointed out that Boeing changed its recruitment policy in 2022 to include diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
