It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward With HNI Corporation (NYSE:HNI)

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 31 20:23

It's not a stretch to say that HNI Corporation's (NYSE:HNI) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in the United States, where the median P/E ratio is around 18x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Recent times have been pleasing for HNI as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/E from rising. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

NYSE:HNI Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry October 31st 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think HNI's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is HNI's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like HNI's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 162%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 52% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 31% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 15%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's curious that HNI's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From HNI's P/E?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that HNI currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
