Meta is developing an AI search engine for its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms.
Meta (META.US) is aiming for Google's (GOOG.US, GOOGL.US) market share.
According to Zhidao Finance APP, it is reported that Meta is developing an AI search engine for its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms, news from an insider involved in this strategy. Meta has not responded to this yet.
Currently, Meta's chatbot relies on Google and Microsoft's Bing search engine to answer questions about current events.
Justin Post, an analyst at Bank of America Global Research, said that Meta's AI search engine could potentially erode Google's search market share.
Post wrote in a research report: 'Given that users spend a lot of time on Meta apps... if more users start using Meta AI to get information, some web traffic may shift away from Google Search.'
However, Meta may not be attempting to challenge Google's position as a general search engine like Bing or AI venture Perplexity. But integrating AI search functionality within social media could lead to further market fragmentation. Currently, Google holds over 90% of the search engine market share.
Based on estimates, if Meta users submit three queries to the company's AI search engine per week, it would be equivalent to approximately 30 billion queries per year, while Google processes around 2 trillion searches annually.
Last Friday, Meta announced that its AI chatbot will utilize Reuters' news content to provide real-time answers to user inquiries. The US Department of Justice previously indicated that due to a judge's ruling on Google's illegal monopoly in general search services and general text advertising, the Department of Justice may attempt to break up Google.
As of the close on Tuesday, Meta rose by 2.62% to $593.28.
